The Importance of General Cognitive Ability

The Importance of General Cognitive Ability We are often asked questions about the way we select new members of our team. Our answer – that the core requirements for a future specialist in web design and software development, or a consultant in transformation, are loyalty and problem-solving ability – is often met with surprise.

Yesterday, we read an interview in which a Google HR consultant spoke about the qualities sought in future employees of one of the greatest companies in the era of digital transformation.

Google currently employs 114,000 people. Every year, hundreds of thousands of professionals apply for roles there. Only a few thousand make it to the final stage and secure a position at Google.

Over the years, Google has continuously refined and improved the way it searches for and selects its employees. This requires the analysis of an enormous volume of information in order to place the right people in the right roles. The answer to the question of university degrees is that no correlation has been observed between successful hires and either the university the employee attended or their grade average. Employees are recruited from a wide range of universities.

In addition, Google aims to recruit people from groups that have traditionally remained somewhat outside the core technology space. For example, the number of women hired into roles not directly related to technology increased significantly in just one year. It turned out that a team made up of people from different professional backgrounds and with different origins performs better.

General cognitive ability is extremely important – that is, an individual’s ability to solve problems. Even more important are the questions a candidate asks while searching for a solution – in other words, their approach. Answers to unusual questions – „teasers“ – are far less important.

The ability to learn new things and the ability to act in real time, to connect different types of information, even when only limited fragments are available.
Domain-specific skills and experience are only an advantage.
„What we are looking for is, do you have emergent leadership“
