What is Performance Max?

HomeThe Experts CornerWhat is Performance Max?

Performance Max is a campaign type in Google Ads. It is goal-oriented and allows a single campaign to run ads across all Google advertising channels — Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

Google describes it as an AI-powered format that automatically optimises delivery, bidding, audiences and parts of the creative execution in order to achieve more conversions or a higher conversion value.

Put simply, instead of building separate campaigns for different networks, Performance Max brings everything together within a single system and uses Google Ads signals to decide where, to whom and with which message the ad should be shown, based on the defined business objective.

It is most commonly used when you want:
  • more sales
  • more leads
  • better ROAS
  • broader reach across the Google ecosystem.

How does Performance Max work in practice?

Online store owners provide goals, budget, asset groups with copy, images, video and other materials. The system automatically tests combinations and optimises in real time using Google AI and Smart Bidding.

It is also important to note that Performance Max is not simply a replacement for Search campaigns. According to Google’s official description, it is designed to complement keyword-based Search campaigns rather than necessarily replace them entirely.

Its advantages include broader reach from a single campaign, strong automation, optimisation towards conversions and value, and easier management with fewer manual settings.

Its main drawback is that control is more limited compared with traditional Search campaigns, even though Google continues to introduce new reporting and control capabilities, such as search terms reporting and additional targeting options.
