Google Shopping in 2026: how to prepare your online store

HomeBlogGoogle Shopping in 2026: how to prepare your online store

If you run an online store and want more people to see your products in Google, you have probably already come across the term Google Shopping. For many store owners, it sounds technical and confusing – in reality, the concept is easy to understand. In this article, we will look at what Google Shopping is, why it matters for Bulgarian online stores in 2026, and how you can prepare for it without unnecessary pressure.
Owners of online stores are eagerly awaiting the launch of Google Shopping. It is a way for products to appear in Google with their image, name and price when people are searching for something to buy.

Google allows products to be shown both free of charge through so-called free listings and through paid advertising, including campaigns such as Performance Max. In both cases, the foundation is the same – a well-prepared product feed in Google Merchant Center.

This is good news for small and medium-sized online stores. The reason is simple. You can start with free visibility in Google and a properly structured catalogue. After that, you can move on to expanding with paid advertising. Google explicitly states that products may appear free of charge across Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, the Shopping tab and other Google properties.

In 2026, this topic is especially important for Bulgarian online stores. From 1 January 2026, Bulgaria adopted the euro, and this has direct implications for e-commerce and for the way prices are displayed both in the store itself and in the product feed. The European Central Bank confirms that the euro entered circulation in Bulgaria on 1 January 2026, with the official exchange rate set at 1 euro = 1.95583 leva.

For an online shop owner, this means something very practical. If you want your products to appear correctly in Google Shopping for Bulgaria, the prices on the website, in the basket and in the feed must be organised clearly and consistently. Google checks whether the information on price, currency and availability matches between the feed and the product page. If it does not match, products may be limited or disapproved.

Many store owners assume that Google Shopping is only about advertising. That is not entirely true. The first step is not to „run ads“, but to prepare your store in a way that allows Google to understand what you are selling. This is done through Google Merchant Center. There, you submit product information: name, price, image, availability, product link and several other important details. Google then uses this data to display your products in the most relevant placements.

At a basic level, preparation starts with a few entirely standard requirements.

First, the website must have clear product pages. Each page should display an accurate price, up-to-date availability, a strong product image and a purchase button.

Second, you need a properly structured product catalogue that can be connected to Merchant Center.

Third, the store must provide clear information on delivery and returns, because this also affects trust and the overall quality of your visibility in Google.

Image quality is also very important. Google recommends strong, clear product images, and weaker or overly small visuals may create display issues. This is another reason why store owners should not view Google Shopping merely as a „technical setup“, but as a combination of a strong catalogue, high-quality images and accurate commercial information.

If you also have a physical store or showroom, there is another opportunity. Google allows products to appear locally for nearby users through free local listings. This is particularly useful for businesses that want to combine online visibility with physical retail locations.

There is another important context for Bulgaria as well. The e-commerce market continues to grow. According to Passport 2024 by the Bulgarian E-commerce Association, B2C e-commerce in the country exceeded EUR 1.95 billion in 2023, while the forecast for 2024 is EUR 2.34 billion. This means more competition, but also stronger justification for online stores to organise their product visibility in Google properly.

The most important thing for someone just getting started is not to feel intimidated. You do not need to know programming in order to understand the logic. Think of it this way: Google wants to see whether your store is properly structured, whether your products are described clearly and whether the customer will receive exactly what they see. If those foundations are in place, it then makes sense to think about advertising and more serious growth.

As an initial step for 2026, I would recommend that every online store review five things.
1. Check whether prices are clearly displayed in euros.
2. Review whether product images are good enough.
3. Make sure stock availability on the site are up to date.
4. Provide clear delivery and returns terms.
5. And prepare a product catalogue that can be connected to Google Merchant Center.
These are the basic steps without which Google Shopping will not perform well, even if significant advertising spend is added later.

In short, Google Shopping in 2026 is not simply „just another advertising channel“. For online stores in Bulgaria, it forms part of the business’s standard digital shop window. If the store is properly prepared, Google can become a strong source of traffic, visibility and sales. But the preparation begins not with the advertising budget, but with order and consistency within the store itself.
